Ascend Elementary is a Central Oakland site located in the Fruitvale District adjacent to Fruitval BART, and directly beneath the BART tracks. The facilities at Ascend are newly constructed and the playground is shielded with a noise dampener, but the sound of the trains is still audible throughout most of the site. Ascend is also very near I-880, north of which is a primarily residential community, with heavy commercial development along International Boulevard and Fruitvale Avenue, centered especially around the BART station. The area is served by several AC Transit bus routes in addition to having easy access to the BART station.
