This site is located in the Merritt district on 2nd Avenue, in the same vicinity as Dewey Academy, Laney College, the Oakland Museum, La Escuelita Elementary School, and Met West High School. It serves a purely administrative function, housing the offices for the OUSD Board of Education as well as several other district departments. Across the street, La Escuelita is undergoing construction and reprogramming to become the Downtown Educational Complex for OUSD, at which time the area will become an even denser educational center for the city of Oakland. The neighborhood is also very nearby Oakland Chinatown, which features a mix of residential and commercial uses, transitioning into warehouses, train tracks, and port-related industry to the south-west.
